Egham is located in the northeastern part of Surrey and is just a few minutes from the historic site on which the Magna Carta was signed in 1215. Egham was given to the Abbot Chertsey. It remained under the control of the Abbey until it was dissolution in 1537 when it became Crown property. It was a field location near Egham at Runnymede, which was chosen to be the place where the monarch and Barons met when Magna Carta was signed. Because of its proximity to Windsor Castle, King John sought refuge there during the war. This made this event world-famous. Runnymede was just enough from his base to be a safe place for him to meet.
